Simplifying Stock Price Pulls with Quantmod in R

While I must say that the quantmod package for R is quite handy, one of the things I find a little inconvenient is that providing a vector of \(n\) tickers doesn't return a data frame of prices but instead creates \(n\) objects with OHLC data for each ticker.

Opera Internet Browser

Fixing Tab Switching Behavior in Opera

I am aware that my attachment to the Opera browser ever since its fifth iteration back in 2000 puts me in a minority group of internet users. However, over the years I had grown to enjoy the built-in features and smoothness of browsing experience and despite trying to like both Firefox and Chrome I always kept going back to trusty old Opera. Ever since Opera's jump on the WebKit bandwagon, however, a lot of the defining characterisics of the browser disappeared.

Foam Core Insert for Agricola

As it happens all too often, I found inspiration on reddit a couple of weeks ago to create a foam core insert for our Agricola box. The good people at /r/boardgames posted a link to an album for an insert that snuggly fits all game pieces and cards while also providing a detachable tray for the resource pieces.

Coconut Ice-cream Recipe

I have always been an admirer of good ice-cream, and ever since we purchased an ice-cream maker, we have been trying out all sorts of different recipes. Now, coconut ice-cream brings together the freshness of cold coconut flakes and the lushious creaminess of coconut itself, thus making it one of my favorite flavors ever. It is, however, all too easy for the casual ice-cream enthusiast to run into numerous questionable recipes online that use coconut milk for vegan or custard-free alternatives to traditional ice-cream. I am all for healthier snacking, but in case you are searching for a good custard-based recipe, look no further.

Fuji X100T

Fujifilm Announces the X100T

And now let us change course radically from MS SQL to the world of photography. While there is no way for the reader to know, I have been a happy X-E1 user for over a year now, so I was quite excited to hear a whole slew of minor and not so minor announcements today from Fujifilm. They came up with some cosmetic changes to their camera line and introduced a couple of very promising new lenses to their X-mount line.

Playing with the BGG XML API and MS SQL Server

I recently ran across a post on r/boardgames that looked at the historical dynamics of BGG Top 60 Games rankings. The author took advantage of BGG's XML API to access stats for games from 2007 to now. I found this quite curious, as BGG has an abundance of data available on games; they report numbers of copies owned and desired, average ratings, weighted ratings, standard deviation of ratings, etc.

Technology and Jobs Blog Post

Technology and the Automation of Jobs

A recent study was quoted in an Economist article a few months ago regarding the rise of job automation and the social impact it could have in the near future. For the less acquainted with the topic, innovation - considered widely the major source of long-term economic growth - always brings along a certain level of job displacement and transition, as industries upgrade their equipment and processes. This short-term hit in employment is exactly that - short and generally inconsequential; labor moves on to more productive jobs and helps bring the economy forward. However, the study by Oxford University researchers Carl Frey and Michael Osborne reaches a unsettlingly high estimate for the amount of jobs that could get automated in the next two decades - 47%. We had a quick talk inspired by a Huffington Post article on the topic.

The Time Traveler's Profit Maximization Guide

A couple of weeks ago, I came across an interesting discussion on reddit (as I so often do, several times per day), regarding a scenario in which one is allowed to send a 1GB flash drive 5 years back in time to oneself. The question posed was what would one put on it. Predictably, the majority of the debate revolved around people wanting to provide themselves with easy earning opportunities by sending back lists of lottery-winning numbers and stock market data.

Russian Gas Dependence Blog Post

Russian Gas Dependence of European Countries

Combining my newly-found interest in R with the current political situation in Ukraine and Europe's response (or lack thereof, depending on what you expected) proved surprizingly straight-forward. Below you can see a map chart of country dependence of Russian gas that I generated using the googleVis package. Do note the "Edit" option that is now available in the newer versions of googleVis. Cool stuff! And highly relevant to the whole Ukraine situation, I know...

Spaceship Warfare in Movies

It is a little known fact (i.e., literally no one has known until now) that the original intent behind the conception of this blog was to extract interesting discussions from conversations between the co-authors and present them as a more dynamic form of the classic blog post. What follows is the first in (hopefully) a long and fruitful series of such "conversations" that has been somewhat edited to be more comprehensible to the non-bilingual among our followers. Plamen and I have often discussed the way different sci-fi franchises handle life aboard a spaceship, as there often seem to be inconsistencies, errors, or simply ommissions of details. Below, Plamen brings up a point that sparks a broader discussion on tactics and technology in the BSG universe.
